New next project - Moneyball
From Variety: Steven Soderbergh is in talks to direct "Moneyball," the Columbia Pictures adaptation of Michael Lewis' book "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game."

The book focuses on Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics who used a sophisticated computer analysis system to piece together a team that regularly contended for the World Series despite a payroll dramatically lower than such big-market rivals as the New York Yankees.

Brad Pitt, with whom Soderbergh has worked in all of the "Ocean's" films, has been circling "Moneyball" since last year, when Steve Zaillian signed on to adapt the book after original scripter Stan Chervin exited the project. "Marley and Me" helmer David Frankel had also been attached.

Michael De Luca and Rachael Horovitz are producing.

Soderbergh has always wanted to make a sports film and sparked to the opportunity to reteam with Pitt. Soderbergh is looking to make the picture his next directing assignment.

He had been expected to next direct "Cleo," a musical about the fatal romance between Egyptian queen Cleopatra and Roman general Marc Antony. Soderbergh had lined up his "Traffic" star Catherine Zeta-Jones to play the title character and had Hugh Jackman in his sights for Antony. Though he set his financing, Soderbergh decided to push back the film until next year after Jackman dropped out because of scheduling problems.

Soderbergh, rolling out "Che," most recently completed "The Girlfriend Experience" for 2929 and Warner Bros. comedy "The Informant."

Soderbergh was offered Bond film
From an interview with Matt Damon: “He (Soderbergh) told me that years ago he was offered a Bond movie. He told them he'd do it if they gave him creative control. Absolutely not, they said. They have a formula, they stick to it, and it makes them a lot of money. They know what they're doing, and they're going to keep doing it."

Hugh Jackman off 'Cleo' wishlist
From Variety: Hugh Jackman has removed himself from discussions to star with Catherine Zeta-Jones in "Cleo," a 3-D live action musical which Steven Soderbergh will direct as his next project.

No deal had been signed as the ambitious $30 million project is completing its financing, but Soderbergh asked his "Traffic" star Zeta-Jones to play Cleopatra and wanted new Oscar host Jackman to play her lover, the Roman general Marc Antony (Daily Variety, October 24, 2008).

Discussions are reportedly in the works for the role of Julius Caesar to be played by Ray Winstone, the "Beowulf" star who just completed shooting the Martin Campbell-directed "Edge of Darkness" with Mel Gibson.

Soderbergh has said he wants to inject the famous historical love story with rock n' roll songs and a style akin to an Elvis musical. The music was written by the indie rock band Guided by Voices, and the script is by the group's former bass player, James Greer, who is also an author.

Jackman's exit is attributed by insiders to scheduling conflicts, though it is not clear what other project is on his plate.

Soderbergh gets Horton Foote Award
From Variety: Steven Soderbergh has been tapped to receive the Horton Foote Award for screenplay writing.

Soderbergh will be feted during the Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration in Natchez, Miss., on Feb 21.

Past honorees have included Billy Bob Thornton, Charles Burnett and Callie Khouri.

Author Carolyn Haines will also be feted with the Richard Wright Literary Excellence Award during the event.

Soderbergh tunes up Liberace film
From Variety: Steven Soderbergh is in the early stages of developing a biopic about Liberace for Warner Bros., which he will direct.

The filmmaker said he has drafted his "Traffic" star Michael Douglas to play the flamboyant pianist.

Richard LaGravanese is writing the script, and Jerry Weintraub will produce.

Soderbergh is in discussions with Matt Damon to play Scott Thorson, who sued Liberace in 1982 for $113 million in palimony, claiming he was the entertainer’s companion for five years. Even though Liberace never wavered from career-long denials that he was gay, Thorson reportedly settled for $95,000 in 1986.

Liberace died in 1987 of complications from AIDS at age 67.

According to sources, Soderbergh won’t make the Liberace film his next project, or even the one after that.

Soderbergh will next direct "The Girlfriend Experience," about a call girl, for 2929 Entertainment partners Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner and their HDNet label.

That is the second of the six-picture deal Soderbergh made to direct low-budget films that are distributed simultaneously in theatrical, on cable and DVD. The first was "Bubble."

Aside from starring in the Soderbergh-directed and Weintraub-produced "Ocean’s Eleven" film series, Damon just starred for Soderbergh in "The Informant."

Soderbergh's epic `Che' lands US distributor
From Yahoo! News: Steven Soderbergh's Che Guevara film biography "Che" has found a U.S. distributor that will release it in theaters this December to qualify for the Academy Awards.

IFC Films announced Wednesday it acquired domestic rights to the two-part, 4 1/2-hour saga, which stars Benicio Del Toro as the Argentine doctor who became one of the heroes of Fidel Castro's Cuban revolution.

The film will play a one-week qualifying run in Los Angeles and New York in December for Oscar consideration. It will reopen in theaters in January and be available to cable and satellite subscribers through IFC's movies-on-demand service.

"Che" earned Del Toro the best-actor prize in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered. The acquisition was announced at the Toronto International Film Festival, where "Che" also screened.

"`Che' is nothing less than the film event of the year," said Jonathan Sehring, IFC Films president. "By giving us the rise and fall of one of the great icons of history, Steven Soderbergh and Benicio Del Toro, who gives an incredible soulful performance, have humanized him and given audiences around the world something that will be discussed for years to come."
